When to Replace a Smoke Detector
A smoke alarm doesn’t need to be visibly broken to require attention. Persistent chirping after battery and power checks may indicate an end-of-life warning, a power problem, or another condition described in the manufacturer’s instructions.
Common reasons to request replacement include:
- The alarm fails when tested.
- Chirping continues after appropriate battery or power checks.
- The housing or another component has visible damage.
- The device has reached the manufacturer’s replacement date.
- The alarm is 10 years old based on its manufacture date.
Licensed Electrical Work for Residential Alarm Systems
We’re licensed and insured to perform residential electrical work. We emphasize accurate diagnostics, safe installation practices, quality workmanship, and compliance with current electrical codes that apply to the project.
We back our work with a strong warranty. We also provide bilingual service in English and Spanish so homeowners and property managers can communicate clearly about the existing system and proposed work.
Our Smoke Detector Installation Process
We begin by assessing the home’s layout and existing devices. We review their locations, power sources, condition, and electrical configuration before discussing the appropriate installation or replacement work.
Depending on the property and project scope, the visit can include:
- Replacing outdated alarms: We remove devices that have reached the end of their service life and install compatible replacements.
- Adding alarms: We place approved devices in required residential locations based on the home’s layout and applicable standards.
- Connecting compatible devices: We connect alarms when the devices and electrical configuration support interconnection.
- Testing operation: We test installed alarms to confirm that they receive power and produce an audible signal as intended.
Permit and inspection requirements vary with the scope of work and the rules of the local authority having jurisdiction. We account for applicable requirements when evaluating each installation.

California Smoke Detector Requirements
California Health and Safety Code Section 13113.7 requires smoke alarms in dwelling units intended for human occupancy. Devices must be approved and listed by the State Fire Marshal, then installed according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Current California building standards generally call for detectors in each sleeping room and outside each separate sleeping area near bedrooms. A device is also required on every additional story, including basements and habitable attics.
Power Sources & Required Device Features
New construction requires hardwired devices powered by the home’s electrical system and equipped with battery backup. Existing homes without construction may use battery-only devices, subject to the requirements that apply to the property and product.
Since July 1, 2014, California has prohibited the State Fire Marshal from listing a battery-only smoke alarm unless it contains a nonreplaceable, nonremovable battery designed to power the device for at least 10 years. These products are commonly described as 10-year sealed battery alarms.
Since January 1, 2015, listed devices must display the manufacture date and provide a place to record the installation date. They must also include a hush feature that temporarily reduces nuisance alarms without requiring the device to be disabled.
Carbon Monoxide Alarms in California Homes
Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms detect different hazards. California Health and Safety Code Section 17926 requires a State Fire Marshal approved carbon monoxide device in each existing dwelling unit that has a fossil fuel burning heater or appliance, a fireplace, or an attached garage.
Combination devices can address both hazards when the product is listed for both functions. Installation locations must follow the product instructions and applicable California requirements.
